Anyone who’s been grocery shopping lately has likely come to the realization that those plastic bags we all have been using for so long are now costing 5 cents each at major grocery retailers like Sobeys and Loblaws (amongst others like No-Frills and Price Chopper who have been charging for bags for ages). Great, this is all well and good, and I totally agree with this, it will certainly keep unwanted plastic bags out of the landfill. So now everyone has spend money on re-usable bags to rid our landfills of plastic bags, wonderful +1 for the planet.
So with all this ‘do-gooding’ we’re now doing, why the frig do cashiers no longer bag my groceries at the checkout? All of a sudden they start charging for bags, we customers buy/bring our own AND even have to bag our own groceries now? What gives? I was pretty ticked when I went into the brand-new state-of-the-art Loblaws today and put my re-usable grocery bags on the conveyor belt and the girl behind the register just passed over them and looked at me like “Seriously? I don’t do that anymore…” Is there some new rule that I’m not aware of? Are they not allowed to touch our disease-ridden re-usable bags? I expect to bag my own groceries when I go to discount food stores but not when I go to the premium grocery retailers. I expect somewhat of a ‘premium’ service, know what I mean? Apparently that’s too much to ask for.
Ok well, lets look at it from another angle: What if I pay the 5 cent premium for your plastic bags – will you bag my groceries for me then? Short answer, nope. If you happen to forget your bags and need to buy them, the first thing the cashier asks you is “How many bags do you need?” My response? “How the frig do I know?!” Unless I’ve only got a loaf of bread and a box of cereal my bag count could be anywhere from 5-20. So since I’ve got a full load of groceries here so how about you bag them as you check me out, count ‘em up and charge me for the number of bags I used.
Maybe I’m just lazy?
