Nexicom it is!

April 28th, 2009

My last post made reference to an ISP change, and well – the speedtest results are in. I am PUMPED! Not only is Nexicom providing me with faster service, but they’re also providing me with unlimited bandwidth, no throttling and Giganews usenet access. A quick speedtest here shows the tales:

But my downloads max out at 1.5 MB/sec and uploads at 100k/sec (of which, I have done plenty of tests on over the last 12 hours). So needless to say, I plan on calling Cogeco tomorrow to say “bye bye…” They really blew this one, implementing a hard cap on bandwidth overages is going to cost them alot of customers. If you are looking for an internet service provider (ISP) in Peterborough, Ontario – look no further than Nexicom. I know I’m fresh on the Nexicom scene, but I’m feeling good about this.

An ISP Change on the horizon?

April 20th, 2009

So after yesterday’s post about Cogeco implementing a surcharge for any bandwith consumed above and beyond your alloted “quota” each month. I decided to give Nexicom a call to see what they had to say about things. Nexicom is a local provider in the Peterborough area that provides ADSL2+ access for city residents quoting speeds of up to 20MBps(!) – but here’s the kicker: NO BANDWIDTH CAP. Obv, 20MB is the absolute max and you’re going to be really hard pressed to hit that max unless maybe you’re right beside their main distribution feed, which as it turns out is on Hunter St – three blocks away.

After sending a few messages back and forth with one of their (extremly friendly and helpful) reps on DSLReports he confirmed the service available in my area and also confirmed that a subscriber less than a block from my house has service at 15MBps. Needless to say, I was sold on the idea. So I called them up, activated my services, and the wheels are in motion for a new ISP for this guy.

Nexicom charges $45/month for their DSL service + $9 for a “Dry Loop” connection (for those without landline service). No contracts, billed to your credit card (or pre-authorized chequing) and yeah, all they require is a 3 month minimum service hookup. I’m pumped to see how it goes.

As for now, I still have my Cogeco service active. I want to put them both to the test… But if I can get 15MB, Heck, even 10MBps to match what I currently get with Cogeco with NO CAP… Well that would just be AOK with me.

Cogeco’s actually going to charge on Bandwidth overages now…

April 19th, 2009

Hmm, so this bit of news left me quite ticked off. I got a letter in the mail from my ISP Cogeco Cable explaining that:

We’re making changes to better meet your online needs

Hmm, sounds promising… As I read on, the letter goes on to explain that if I go over my alloted 60GB’s of upload/download traffic per month they’re going to charge me $1.50 for every GB I use over my plan’s limit to a maximum of $30. Oh great, so apparently those “changes to better meet my needs” is nothing more than a cash grab. Here’s the kicker… From what I’ve read elsewhere on the web (DSLReports.com) if you go over your 60GB, don’t expect $30 in overages to give you unlimited internet – but rather after you’ve incurred $30 in charges, they have every right to cut off your service for the month.

WHAT?!

So this whole “improvement” takes place as of June 1st. I already get a discount on my Cogeco services through my work ($30 for Internet as opposed to $45) but with Nexicom offering 12MB service for $45-50/month with NO caps – Needless to say, I’m shopping around for a new ISP.

Done!

I’m sitting in Victoria Park with Eudora on a beautiful 18 degree sunny day with one thought running through my head… I am DONE! Yes indeed, this time two years ago I was filing my applications to return to school, and here I sit finished. The time has indeed flown by, but I’m glad to be finished. That’s it for now, time to throw the ball for E some more.

The end is near

April 11th, 2009

Well, t-minus 2 exams, and 3-4 assignments – and come this time next week, I’ll have pretty much wrapped up my studies at Trent University. It’s a good feeling and been a long time coming.

For the most part, I have enjoyed my time at Trent much more than I did at Fleming. For me, the people made the difference. It was a rough start to things at Trent for me, I was discouraged quite early in my studies, wasn’t sure if I was going to make it – but here I am at the end of the finish line. It’s safe to say, that if it weren’t for a great support network of friends I don’t think I would have stuck it out. So Al, Ian, Mark, Sean, Geoff and last but not least my sister Bethany, who it has been a real privilage working with in a number of classes over the last couple yeras – I thank you all for your support, friendship and encouragement.

I look forward to seeing what the future has in store for everyone.
